Recognition

At least one of the typical symptoms appears several days a week, and lasts for several hours a day. Two types of fever can be distinguished depending on what kind of allergen causes the symptoms and how long it irritates the nasal mucosa. The first one called perennial rhinitis lasts during the whole year, while the other one is named seasonal fever, which lasts for a few weeks or months. The form of the latter appearing mostly in spring, in summer and early autumn is called hay fever, which denomination is generally used as a substitute for allergic rhinitis.

Symptoms don't always appear to be severe, nevertheless, patients are recommended to consult a specialist for guidance, since patients suffering from hay fever are 3-6 times more likely to develop asthmatic respiratory disorders than patients without rhinitis.

Complaints can be caused by allergy in the following cases:

  • Some sort of allergic disease has already occurred within the family.
  • Allergic disease are more likely to appear in firstborn children.
  • Allergy is more frequent in boys.
  • In case an allergy-originated disease has already appeared in the patient.
  • Complaints always can be linked to the same season, or to a certain place (e.g. an old apartment).
  • Symptoms are always related to a given activity (e.g. agricultural work).
  • If typical complaints appear after eating certain food.
  • Watery rhinorrhea lasting for more than 7-10 days.
  • Nasal complaints appear without fever.
  • Symptoms are not recovered even following an antibiotic treatment.
